One wrong article takes the sentence with it

right

auf den kleinen Tisch

wrong

auf die kleine Tisch

Gender runs through every case: der Tisch, den Tisch, dem Tisch, and through the adjective ending too. Guess the article and you are guessing at half the sentence.

In the exam that costs marks. In conversation people hear it straight away.

Why it never stuck before

Rules only get you so far
20 percent of the nouns follow a rule. The rest simply do not.
The cards pile up
Sooner or later the box is full, you have lost track of what is due today, and you end up drilling the same easy words again.
Learned once is not learned
This is what actually goes wrong. You had it, you left it alone for two weeks, and it was gone.

Forgetting is predictable

Memory drops off steeply after you learn something. Every repetition puts it back, and the next drop is shallower than the one before.

Memory over time

You never have to rate yourself.

Instead of buttons for „easy“ or „hard“, it measures how long you hesitated and compares that against your own pace. Every word ends up with its own interval.

You can see it moving

After a few days you can see how many words have stuck. A number that goes up every day.
